The Theatre

The Theatre of Szentgotthárd houses various celebrations, award ceremonies, concerts, school shows and other events since 1988. However, the history of the building dates back as early as the 17th century: In 1556, Margit grace-mistress banished the Cistercians peacefully working since 1183 from Szentgotthárd with her armed forces. In 1605 general Wolfgang Tieffenbach exploded the church and the monastery because of the Bocskay rebellion. For seventy years people of Szentgotthárd had no church and the worshippers had to go to Rábakethely for the service.

In 1675, George Széchenyi, archbishop of Kalocsa, as a grace-lord had the dilapidated church renovated. Using also original stones, the second church of the town was built between 1676 and 1677, in which there were three altars in the only ship: in honour of Saint Gotthard, Strained Beatific and Grievous Mother. After the third church had been built in the Mid-Eighteenth Century, this second one lost its significance and was used as granary. From that time on, it was mentioned as the Granary Church. In 1988 the building was transformed into a City Theatre with great financial sacrifice. Today it is essential part of the art relic group with its landscaped settled environment.
